What went wrong?

Chandrayaan-2 was designed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to perform a soft-landing on the Moon, but the Vikram lander lost control and collided 500 meters before the lunar surface. It was supposed to analyze the geoid of the Moon for 14 days and send data. This malfunction was unexpected as the software was working well during the testing period.

Vikram Lander started maneuvering successfully at an altitude of 5 km from an altitude of 30 km. After this “rough braking”, the lander had trouble with “fine braking”, in which the lander slowed down to the expected speed of 146 meters per second using only one of its thrusters. The lander deviated from its course and collided 750 meters from the intended landing site. The impact of the collision caused damage to machinery and lost contact with the lander.

What will happen next?

Chandrayaan-2 was developed at an estimated cost of Rs 978 crore, including the cost of the spacecraft and rocket launcher, while Chandrayaan-3 will be developed at an estimated Rs 250 crore. For Chandrayaan-3, the orbiter will remain functional from the Chandrayaan-2 mission, requiring only a lander and rover, allowing the organization to attempt a second soft lunar landing.
